Wood Technology I (Construction) course #520
Suggested Grade Level: Freshman or above
Term: 1 year
Suggested Prerequisites: none
The students will work together to build a utility shed for the first semester construction project. The students will learn about blue print reading, foundations, floors, walls, and roofs.
During second semester, the students will construct a project that they can take home. The class will vote on the project and plan its construction. The students will get to choose the drawer fronts, moldings, stains, and finishes. Manufacturing techniques will be used to construct the project efficiently.
... learn what the construction atmosphere is like while working outside as they build a utility shed.
... get a feel of what it is like to work in a manufacturing environment when they work in an industrial type setting and construct a project made from wood.
... apply knowledge gained from other disciplines such as Math, Science, and English.
... develop good practices they can apply to future careers and education.
... gain knowledge and skills of hand tools and machines.
The students will need to purchase the wood for their projects. The costs vary depending on the project and type of wood. If a student decides not to keep the project, we can sell it as a fundraiser to cover the costs.
